The 3D Background

The animated 3D background is a procedurally generated landscape that creates an infinite, dynamically rendered terrain with fractal trees, atmospheric effects, and interactive camera controls. The system combines multiple techniques from procedural generation, computer graphics, and geology to create a visually compelling and performant background.

Overview

The background system consists of several interconnected components:

  1. Terrain Generation - Procedural terrain with geography types

  2. L-System 3D Tree Generation - Fractal tree structures using L-systems

  3. 3d Background - Cell Shading - Non-photorealistic rendering

  4. 3d Background - Atmospheric Effects - Mist and fog systems

  5. 3d Background - Camera System - Interactive camera controls

  6. Performance Optimization - Optimization techniques

Key Features

Infinite Terrain

The terrain is generated continuously as the camera moves forward, creating an infinite landscape. Chunks are generated ahead of the camera and disposed when out of view, ensuring smooth performance while maintaining the illusion of endless terrain.

Procedural Geography

The terrain uses geologically-inspired geography types that smoothly transition between regions:

  • Mountains, valleys, plateaus

  • Coastal areas, deserts, forests

  • Advanced features: canyons, river deltas, badlands, tundra, volcanic regions, karst

Fractal Trees

Trees are generated using two approaches:

  • Simplified geometric trees for the background (performance-optimized)

  • L-system trees for detailed visualization (see L-System 3D Tree Generation)

Atmospheric Effects

Misty fog creates depth and atmosphere, inspired by Chinese landscape paintings. The fog system uses GPU-based particle animation for performance.

Interactive Camera

The camera follows a sophisticated flight path through the terrain, with:

  • Terrain-following to maintain appropriate height

  • Smooth banking and rotation

  • Interactive controls for mouse movement

  • Star targeting when hovering over links

Technical Architecture

The system is built with:

  • Three.js for 3D rendering

  • React for component management

  • TypeScript for type safety

  • Procedural generation for infinite content

Performance

Performance was critical: this needs to run smoothly across devices. Key optimizations include:

  • Level of Detail (LOD) for terrain chunks

  • Chunk-based generation and disposal

  • Throttled frame rates

  • GPU-based particle animation

  • IntersectionObserver for visibility detection

  • Reduced geometry complexity

See Performance Optimization for detailed techniques.
